Challenge
The Next Step Trust in Halifax needed to transform a previously unusable outdoor space — overgrown, muddy and waterlogged after rain — into an accessible memorial garden for people in their care. Standing water and uneven surfaces made the area inaccessible for wheelchair users and individuals with mobility aids. The project required a sensory-friendly, low-maintenance finish that would remain usable in all weather conditions.
Solution
Rosehill Drainage Mats were installed along the length of the garden to manage water below the surface. An SBR rubber base layer was laid over and around the mats to stabilise the foundation. Rosehill TPV® softfall surfacing was then applied on top, delivering a vibrant, cushioned and seamless finish. The integrated system created an accessible pathway and play zone in a single surface, with water directed away from the active area to maintain performance in wet weather.
Result
The garden is now fully accessible for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility. No standing water or pooling occurs after rainfall, and the vibrant TPV finish provides an enhanced sensory experience with a safe, soft surface. The project serves as a proof of concept for integrating Rosehill Drainage Mats with TPV® surfacing — setting the benchmark for similar inclusive community installations.
